Professor Ken Hyland

Professor Ken Hyland is a Professor of Applied Linguistics and Director of Centre for Applied English Studies at the University of Hong Kong. He was previously a professor at the Institute of Education, University of London and has taught in Africa, Asia and Europe. He is best known for his research into writing and academic discourse, having published over 190 articles and 20 books on these topics. His most recent books include Academic Publishing (Oxford University Press, 2015), Disciplinary Identity (Cambridge University Press, 2012), and Inovation and Change in Language Education (Routledge, 2013. edited with Lillian Wong). He was founding co-editor of the Journal of English for Academic Purposes and is co-editor of Applied Linguistics.

Professor Emeritus Dato' Dr. Asmah Haji Omar

Professor Emeritus Dato' Dr. Asmah Haji Omar is known for her work on various aspects of the Malay Language as well as of Malaysian indigenious languages. She joined the University of Malaya (UM) in 1963 teaching Malay linguistics in the Department of Malay Studies. In 1976 she was promoted to the newly established Professorial Chair of Malay Linguistics, which she held until her retirement in 2000. During her tenure at the University of Malaya, she was also the Academic Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor in the implementation of the national language policy, and the founder Director of the Language Centre (established in 1972) which was elevated to the present Faculty of Languages and Linguistics in 1996. It was at this Centre/Faculty that she had the opportunity to design curricula and tests for the various languages taught, including English. In 2001 she was invited by the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, in Tanjong Malim, to set up the Institute of Malay Civilization, where she held the post of Director as well as the Professorial Chair of Malay Civilization. After 4 years there she decided to come back to Kuala Lumpur. She has been re-employed since 2008 by the UM as Professor of Malay Linguistics in its Academy of Malay Studies.
